A person who can use "Cushion words" will give an impression of geniality, kindness, politeness, refinement, humbleness to surroundings.
Unlike English conversation, we won't tell the conclusion till the end in Japanese conversation. So that we will try to understand what the speaker is going to talk about through total information like facial expression, voice tone, attitude etc.

Then, Cushion words will help our conversation.
Cushion words, it is said as words which will be a buffer or are better to be added. But in a word, it is "the advance notice".

Before starting conversation we can make an advance notice. We frequently use "I'm sorry, but..... (Moushiwake gozaimasenga)" which would be a notice before going to talk about something a listener may unwilling to follow.
There are other examples here:

"It might bother you, but (Otesuu desuga)", "It might trouble you, but (Gomendou desuga)", "If you don't mind... (Moshi yoroshikereba)", "Thank you for your offer, but..... (Sekkaku desuga)" like these.

This "notice" can reduce friction of the relationship like using lubricating oil.

Finally, these are 3 advantages of using Cushion words.
1. It makes the listener prepare what is going to be told about in advance.
2. It is going to give the listener a hint to understand the contents earlier.
3. It shows consideration to the listener with humble mind and attitude.

So these Cushion words as advance notice were originally resulted from our compassion.

Some Japanese elderly person may feel uncomfortable if you use only your left hand to give something to the person as the left hand meant dissolution of a relationship in the past. In addition to that, if you point something as your hand and arm is crossing between you and the person, it means also the same.
Regarding to that, if you show your palm to the person, it is going to be positive feeling or respectful impression for others. On the other hand, if you show your back of the hand, it may give some negative impression.

When you give some important documents or things to a person...
1. using your both hands or your right hand with your left hand followed.
2. saying a word like "please...." or "if you like to have....." etc.
3. showing your facial expression and eye contact.
4. handing a thing which is facing its front to the person slowly with respect.
